There is a particular kind of energy that lives inside colour — not the quiet hum of a carefully chosen palette, but something rawer and more urgent. A surge. A declaration. This is the feeling I chase in my Bold Expressions series, and it is a feeling I have never quite been able to explain in words — only in paint.
Bold Expressions didn't begin with a concept. It began with a restlessness. A growing sense that some emotions are simply too large for subtlety — that there are moments in life that demand vivid contrasts, charged colour, and an unfiltered sense of release. Watercolour, with its fluid unpredictability, became the perfect vehicle for that energy. Not watercolour as delicacy, but watercolour as force.
The Impulse Before the Idea
Each piece in this series starts with an impulse rather than a plan. I open the canvas and I begin — trusting the energy of that first mark to carry everything forward. Fluid washes collide with assertive shapes. Rough textures interrupt smooth gradients mid-flow. Colours bleed past their boundaries in ways I didn't anticipate and wouldn't change. There is a moment in every piece where the work stops being something I'm making and starts being something that's happening — and that moment is everything.
The Language of Contrast
Contrast is the grammar of Bold Expressions. Deep saturated shadows pressed against luminous highlights. Jagged overlays cutting across soft washes. Neon hues where neutrals might be expected. I reach for crimsons, electric teals, burning oranges — colours that carry emotional weight before the viewer has consciously registered them. I want the eye to move, to feel slightly off-balance, to sense that something is unresolved and alive.
Breaking Symmetry
I made an early decision to abandon symmetry entirely. Perfect balance creates beautiful images — but not always powerful ones. Asymmetry breathes. A composition that leans, that carries unexpected weight, that breaks its own rhythm — this is a composition that refuses to be passive. In Bold Expressions, shapes overlap where they shouldn't. Textures appear where the eye expects smoothness. The result is artwork that feels in motion even when it's still.
Colour as Emotional Honesty
At its heart, this series is about emotional honesty. Each piece captures something specific — a moment of courage, of transformation, of clarity arrived at suddenly and without warning. I think of them less as artworks and more as records of feeling. Not illustrations of emotion, but emotion itself given form and colour and the particular luminosity that only watercolour can carry.
A Visual Declaration
When a Bold Expressions print hangs on a wall, I want it to do something. To change the energy of the room. To meet the viewer with an intensity that doesn't overwhelm but awakens. These pieces don't whisper — they surge forward, and they ask something of the people who live with them. A willingness to feel. A tolerance for beauty that confronts as much as it comforts.
Bold Expressions is, in the end, a quiet declaration — that fearless creativity is its own form of beauty, and that the most honest art is the art that holds nothing back.
