Azerbaijani filmmaker Rec Revan on body horror, parasites, and independent cinema at the edge of the world
The Origin of OBITUS
The central idea behind OBITUS began with a real parasite: Cymothoa exigua, commonly known as the tongue-eating louse. In nature, the parasite enters a fish through its gills, destroys its tongue, and eventually replaces it. The disturbing reality of this organism became the foundation for the film's fictional outbreak. The story explores what might happen if a similar parasite adapted to human hosts — not only taking control of part of the body but also changing human behavior. Rather than treating the parasite simply as a monster, OBITUS builds its horror around infection, isolation, loss of control, and the fear of something living inside the human body.
The Story
Following a natural disaster, survivors become isolated in a remote mountain village. Their struggle to escape the devastation takes a darker turn when a parasitic outbreak begins spreading among them. At the center of the story are a father and his young daughter, whose attempt to survive gradually becomes both a physical and emotional journey. The film combines survival horror, body horror, and family tragedy while asking how much a person can endure — and what they are willing to sacrifice — to protect someone they love.
Building the World of the Film
OBITUS was designed as an atmospheric horror film rather than a conventional creature feature. Darkness, fog, abandoned village environments, forests, severe weather, and the feeling of being cut off from the outside world all play essential roles. The visual language was developed around an anamorphic cinematic look, allowing the landscapes and isolated characters to exist within wide, threatening compositions. The intention was to make nature feel powerful and indifferent, while the infected human body becomes another hostile environment.
Production in Azerbaijan
Producing an independent feature-length horror film in Azerbaijan presented unique challenges. The country does not have a large established genre-film industry, so many technical and creative solutions had to be developed specifically for the production. The film includes night exteriors, remote locations, storm and flood sequences, infection effects, practical makeup, animal scenes, and extensive visual-effects work. Achieving these elements with independent resources required careful planning, experimentation, and a great deal of patience. One of the greatest challenges was maintaining the same atmosphere across material created under very different conditions. Lighting, fog, weather, practical effects, sound, and visual effects all needed to feel as though they belonged to one continuous and believable world.
Behind the Scenes
A significant amount of attention was given to the physical details of the infection. The parasite's effect on the tongue and mouth is an important part of the film's body horror, but the goal was never to use gore without purpose. These details needed to support the story's central fear: losing ownership of your own body. The production also worked with difficult exterior environments, including forests and mountain areas at night. These locations gave the film a natural scale and texture that would have been difficult to reproduce on a controlled set, but they also made every scene more demanding. OBITUS was created by a team determined to prove that an internationally accessible genre film could emerge from Azerbaijan while still carrying the atmosphere and identity of its place of origin.
What OBITUS Represents
For Rec Revan, OBITUS is not only a horror film. It is also a step toward bringing Azerbaijani independent cinema into a wider international genre conversation. The film is currently in final post-production and is scheduled for theatrical release in Azerbaijan on November 19, 2026. International distribution discussions and festival opportunities are also being explored.
