"Bipolar Women" and the Art of Being Uncomfortable in the Best Way
"Bipolar Women" is an ongoing series of acrylic, pastel, and ink drawings created over the past three years. This series is meant to be uncomfortable — uncomfortable in the best way art can make you feel.
The work draws from the mutual feeling of living with bipolar disorder since my diagnosis four years ago. The emotions override everything, whether I'm holding a paintbrush, a pen, or a microphone.
These characters express raw emotion, creating haunting, eerie images. The unknown is an invitation: to heal, to let feelings freely express themselves while looking at these images.
The only challenge I face in creating this work is allowing myself to be vulnerable enough to show it to the world — and to sell it.
My inspirations are staying strong through hardship without getting stuck in victim mode. Beyond that: darkness, trees (especially willows, my favorite), anything obscure and strange.
I find beauty in all of it.
Bio
Raven Ramirez Cantu (AKA Bunny Alien Girl) is an Erie artist, model, licensed cosmetologist, performer and nutrition coach. She resides in Houston, Texas, where she was born and grew up. Her artistic practice allows you to feel and walk-through a beautiful haunted maze, where you are allowed to be and heal.
