My creative process revolves mostly around finding ways to enter into a flow. I usually reach that state through being overwhelmed by inspiration, immersed in music, or by continually placing paint on the canvas until something emerges that I can follow. I paint, make music, or write based on impressions that arise. These can be a specific color, texture, or gesture.
Nothing is planned. I have no formal training, my approach to creating is entirely intuitive and playful. My primary aim is to make work that feels spacious and open. I try to maintain a simple daily discipline of working on something daily. Inevitably, I have many pieces going at once across acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, pastel, writing, and music. Most of my days are spent moving from one medium to the next as impulse dictates. This constant movement is how I nurture the flow.
Bio:
I was raised in Portland, Oregon, but now reside in the south of France with my wife and our cat. As a child, I dreamt of illustrating comics. As a teen and into my early 20s, I pursued music. However, after the sudden death of my mother, these creative pursuits took a backseat. I dove headfirst into the Eastern traditions of Indian Hatha Yoga, Ayurveda, and Jyotish, as well as the Tibetan Buddhist traditions of Dzogchen and Mahamudra.
After 15+ years of dedicated daily practice in these traditions, I rediscovered my capacity and love of making art, and I have been pursuing it ever since. I have no formal training in art—just some college courses in writing and music. I have always relied heavily on direct, hands-on experience, which has led me to cultivate a daily studio practice. My work explores the confluence of intuition, concerted daily practice, and playfulness.
